The Department of Economics and Development Studies was ranked position 15 in the financial year 2022/2023 performance appraisal ranking. This was an improvement from position 41 in the preceding year.

The Department of Economics and Development Studies attended a three day workshop at Burch's Resort, Naivasha on 18th to 20th September 2023 to discuss and finalize the Departmental Curriculum Development/Review.
The workshop was a great success and theo Curriculum will be discussed at the Faculty and Senate levels inorder for the Department to own it and implement it in the coming academic years.
The Department of Economics and Development studies team organized an afternoon orientation session for the 1st year students (2023/2024) of Economics and Statistics on Thursday, 28th September 2023. There were about 400 1st year students present taking Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Economics and Statistics. They were accompanied and joined by various University of Nairobi students’ associations’ leadership. They had talks from the departmental Chair (Dr. Martine Odhiambo Oleche), various thematic heads, Student’s Leadership team (UNSA, UNARSA and ECOSA).

Hikmet Gunay is a Professor at the University of Manitoba, Canada; a Distinguished Professor at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, China; and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Nairobi. He holds a PhD in Economics, and MSc in Mathematics from the University of Iowa. He specializes in Industrial Organization, Game Theory, and Microeconomics. His research includes social learning among consumers and firms, and auctions.
