Philosophy
The Master of Arts in Economics is designed to provide rigorous training in economic theory, applied economics, and econometric methods.
Rationale
To prepare masters level graduates of economics to address pressing economic needs of our times by being equipped to contribute to training, research, policy evolution and economic management.
Objectives
The main objectives of the MA in Economics include:
- Attain a solid foundation in modern economic theory and have the ability to understand the operation of markets and economies.
- Possess mathematical and econometric skills to analyze economic questions and evaluate programs and policies.
- Develop research questions — both empirical and theoretical — and analyze them.
- Communicate economic content and arguments clearly and effectively in workplace settings in both written and verbal modalities.

Structure
Schedule of Intakes
Department of Economics and Development Studies, University of Nairobi has ONE intake in a year.
- September Intake (Every Year)
Mode of Delivery
The programme shall adopt blended learning through the use of face-to-face and online modes. The face-to-face learning will take place within the classroom setting at the Main Campus. Currently, learning is through online delivery. The online classes are conducted over video conferencing platforms such as Mtihani, Zoom and Google Meet, among others.
The classes are conducted in the evening, Monday to Friday. Time 5.30pm– 8.30pm.
The programme shall consist of 2 years of full-time study by coursework, examination and a Project Paper. The first year of study shall be devoted to coursework only, while the second year will be devoted to further coursework (first semester), research, writing and examination of the Project Paper.

Exams Regulations
- All candidates shall be required to take and pass first year examinations in all the EIGHT course units offered.
- Each course unit shall be examined through a three hour written examination paper at the end of the semester.
- The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks, while continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
- Continuous assessment shall consist of term papers and tests.
- The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in up to TWO papers may on the recommendations of the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a supplementary examination in the failed paper(s) during the next examination season.
- A candidate who fails in MORE THAN TWO papers or a candidate, who fails in any of the supplementary examinations, shall be discontinued.
Second Year Examinations:
- All candidates shall be required to take and pass second year examinations in all the FOUR Elective units.
- Each course shall be examined through a three hour written examination paper at the end of the first semester of the second year.
- The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks in each course unit, while continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
- The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails ONE paper may, on recommendations of the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a supplementary in the failed paper during the next examination season.
- A candidate who fails in MORE THAN ONE paper during regular sitting or fails a supplementary examination shall be discontinued.
Examination of the Research Project
- Each candidate, working under the guidance of at least two academic supervisors shall complete an original in-depth research project on a topic chosen in consultation with the School.
- The pass mark for the research project shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in the research project shall be given three months to revise and re-submit for examination.
- A candidate who fails in the revised project shall be discontinued.
Admission Requirements
The common regulation for the admission and registration in a Masters degree in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
In addition, the following shall be eligible for registration for the Masters programme.
Holders of at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree in Economics.
Holders of degree or equivalent qualifications from other institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi as being on comparable academic status to those in (a) above.

Attachment Opportunities
Students may apply for attachment opportunities during the long holidays (May-August) every year. They get the opportunities to expand their economic knowledge and gain professional experience. There are many different types of economics attachments based on various types of work. The key areas: Mathematics and statistics; Research; Communication; Data analysis; Technology; and Business. The attachments opportunities are available in private and public sectors of the economy.

Research Institutions
During their study period, Development Studies students are actively engaged as research assistants in research projects. This gives them a chance to build their development research skills. Also, as the projects are implemented collaboratively with industry partners, students get opportunities to build contacts with potential future employers.
Our graduates go on to work in the private sector, civil society organisations and public sectors in Kenya and beyond. They are working to address emerging issues that have implications for development in various capacities including:
