MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH ECONOMICS AND POLICY

Overview

Philosophy

The Master of Science in Health Economics is designed to provide rigorous training in applied economics, and econometric methods in health economics and policy.  

 Rationale

The programme will prepare masters level graduates of economics and other social science disciplines to undertake applied health economics research with a view to addressing challenges facing the health care system by equipping them with critical skills in theoretical foundations and practical applications of health economics, policy, planning and financing for decision-making and policy development in health and health care, within the context of the ethical principles of society.

Objectives

The main objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Equip students with necessary knowledge and skills to formulate, implement and evaluate health policies and plans
  2. Enable students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a diverse range national health policy, including current and emerging trends
  3. Enable students to develop an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of health systems and health economics
  4. Enable students to gain practical skills to undertake cost-effectiveness analysis and economic evaluation of health care programs

Exams Regulations

5.9 Mode of Delivery

The programme shall adopt blended learning through the use of face-to-face and online modes. The face-to-face learning will take place within the classroom setting at the Main Campus. Currently, learning is through online delivery. The online classes are conducted over video conferencing platforms such as Mtihani, Zoom and Google Meet, among others.

The classes are conducted in the evening, Monday to Friday. Time 5.30pm– 8.30pm. 

The programme shall consist of 2 years of full-time study by coursework, examination and a Project Paper.  The first year of study shall be devoted to coursework only, while the second year will be devoted to further coursework (first semester), research, writing and examination of the Project Paper.

Exams Regulations

  • All candidates shall be required to take and pass first year examinations in    all        the EIGHT course units offered.
  • Each course unit shall be examined through a three hour written        examination paper at the end of the semester.
  • The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks, while       continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
  • Continuous assessment shall consist of term papers and tests.
  • The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
  • A candidate who fails in up to TWO papers may on the recommendations   of         the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a   supplementary examination in the failed paper(s) during the next examination   season.
  • A candidate who fails in MORE THAN TWO papers or a candidate, who fails in any of the supplementary examinations, shall be discontinued.

Second Year Examinations:

  • All candidates shall be required to take and pass second year examinations in all the FOUR Elective units.
  • Each course shall be examined through a three hour written examination paper at the end of the first semester of the second year.
  • The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks in each course unit, while continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
  • The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
  • A candidate who fails ONE paper may, on recommendations of the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a supplementary in the failed paper during the next examination season.
  • A candidate who fails in MORE THAN ONE paper during regular sitting or fails a supplementary examination shall be discontinued.

 

Examination of the Research Project

  • Each candidate, working under the guidance of at least two academic supervisors shall complete an original in-depth research project on a topic chosen in consultation with the School.
  • The pass mark for the research project shall be 50%.
  • A candidate who fails in the research project shall be given three months to revise and re-submit for examination.
  • A candidate who fails in the revised project shall be discontinued.

The common regulations for admission and registration in a Masters Degree in the University of Nairobi and the School of Economics shall apply.

In addition, the following shall be eligible for admission for the Masters programme.

Holders of Bachelors degree at Upper Second Class honours in economics, health sciences or other related disciplines from the University of Nairobi or other institutions recognized by Senate.

 ·Holders of Bachelors degree at lower second class from the University of Nairobi or other institutions recognized by Senate, with at least two years relevant post qualification working experience.

 ·Holders of a pass degree and a relevant postgraduate Diploma from the University of Nairobi or other institutions recognized by Senate.

·Holders of a pass degree from the University of Nairobi or other institutions recognized by Senate, with at least five years relevant post qualification working experience.

5.8 Application Information

Step 2: Registration and creation of User Account - To register, you need an email address and phone number that will be validated during registration. Every applicant must create their own personal user account.

Step 3: Profile Management - Key-in your personal details and upload scanned copies of academic certificates and a passport size photograph. Only when your profile is complete can you apply for the programme you wish to undertake.

Step 4: Programme Selection - Select and apply for the course you are interested in. You will be issued with a REFERENCE NUMBER and directed to pay the prescribed application fee through the following Available Payment options:

  1. Credit/Debit Card
  2. M-Pesa Pay Bill
  3. Direct Cash Deposit at any Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) branch

Upon payment, you will receive a confirmation of the payment on the email address and phone number registered in step 2.

Step 5: Application Tracking - Track the status of your application online through the system.  Alerts will be sent to your registered email address and phone number.

 

Attachment Opportunities

Students may apply for attachment opportunities during the long holidays (May-August) every year. They get the opportunities to expand their economic knowledge and gain professional experience. There are many different types of economics attachments based on various types of work. The key areas: Mathematics and statistics; Research; Communication; Data analysis; Technology; and Business. The attachments opportunities are available in private and public sectors of the economy.

During their study period, Development Studies students are actively engaged as research assistants in research projects.
