Overview
The programme takes 4 semesters. In level 1, Semester 1, a student is expected to take XET 501, XET 503, XEQ 505 and XEA 507. In Semester II, the student should take XET 502, XET 504, XEQ 506 & XET 508. In Level II, Semester I, a student will take 4 electives. In Semester II, the student will write XEA 599, which is equivalent to 4 units.
Structure
The program aims at meeting the demand for senior economic policy analysts and managers. Students will be equipped with: 1) a firm understanding of economic principles; and 2) ability to analyze a wide range of economic problems and formulate and implement meaningful economic policies. Each student will, at the end of training be proficient in economic theory, quantitative methods and applications (including computer applications, and in economic policy analysis and management).
Exams Regulations
- All candidates shall be required to take and pass first year examinations in all the EIGHT course units offered.
- Each course unit shall be examined through a three hour written examination paper at the end of the semester.
- The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks, while continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
- Continuous assessment shall consist of term papers and tests.
- The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in up to TWO papers may on the recommendations of the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a supplementary examination in the failed paper(s) during the next examination season.
- A candidate who fails in MORE THAN TWO papers or a candidate, who fails in any of the supplementary examinations, shall be discontinued.
Second Year Examinations:
- All candidates shall be required to take and pass second year examinations in all the FOUR Elective units.
- Each course shall be examined through a three hour written examination paper at the end of the first semester of the second year.
- The final written examination shall account for 70% of the marks in each course unit, while continuous assessment shall account for 30%.
- The pass mark in each course unit shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails ONE paper may, on recommendations of the School’s Board of Examiners and approval by Senate be allowed to take a supplementary in the failed paper during the next examination season.
- A candidate who fails in MORE THAN ONE paper during regular sitting or fails a supplementary examination shall be discontinued.
Examination of the Research Project
- Each candidate, working under the guidance of at least two academic supervisors shall complete an original in-depth research project on a topic chosen in consultation with the School.
- The pass mark for the research project shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in the research project shall be given three months to revise and re-submit for examination.
- A candidate who fails in the revised project shall be discontinued.
Admission Requirements
a) The common regulation for the admission and registration in masters degree in the university of Nairobi shall shall apply.
b) In addition, the following shall be eligible for registration for the masters programme.
i) Holders of least an upper second class honours degree in economics.
ii)Holders of degree or equivalent qualifications from other institutions recognized by the senate of the university of Nairobi as being on on comparable academic status to those in (i) above
