Social Cohesion and Health: The Invisible Health Determinant.
Irene Van Staveren
The objective of this research is to explore the effect of social cohesion on health. The project uses the Indices of Social Development (ISD) to link social determinants to health outcomes in developing countries. Panel data for 54 countries for the period 1990 to 2010 is utilized. The project contributes to the understanding of the role of social cohesion in the production of health care. It further contributes to the civic engagement discourse, which argues that there are many development gains to be made beyond the market and the state. Moreover our use of different indices of social cohesion provides insights in the type of social mechanisms that are most likely to support health improvements at national level.
